August 19, 2023
Today, Aug. 19, 39 year-old Cory Tanner was taken into custody, with assistance from the United States Marshal Service, for his involvement in two separate violent attacks that occurred just after 4 p.m. on Aug. 17.
Following a swift and thorough investigation, it was determined that on Aug. 17 Tanner engaged in a verbal altercation with an adult male in the wooded area along Fred George Road. Tanner struck the man with an axe as the encounter escalated. The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
As that investigation was unfolding, officers were dispatched to a second call regarding a shooting. Investigative efforts reveal less than an hour after the initial incident, Tanner engaged in a second verbal altercation with a man in the same wooded area. Tanner retrieved a firearm and shot the victim, striking him in the face. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries. Tanner fled the scene on foot.
Detectives with Tallahassee Police Department’s (TPD) Violent Crimes Unit were able to quickly determine Tanner as the suspect in both incidents and develop probable cause for his arrest. TPD deployed multiple available resources to apprehend Tanner to no avail. He was subsequently located in Bay County with assistance from the United States Marshal Service and taken into custody without further incident.
The tireless efforts of TPD detectives and partner law enforcement agencies played a pivotal role in this case. The expeditious arrest of Tanner serves as a testament to TPD’s relentless pursuit of justice and ensuring the safety of all residents. If you see something, say something.
