City Commission Approves Balanced Budget
Best-in-class Service Delivery and Economic Recovery Remain Focal Points
September 22, 2021
Today, Sept. 22, the Tallahassee City Commission approved the Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) budget. The balanced budget focuses on ensuring the City's ongoing fiscal health, providing best-in-class service delivery and assisting with economic recovery.
"The City's balanced budget includes funding that will directly impact our community, equip our facilities to better respond to post-pandemic needs, progress toward economic recovery and address housing and human service needs," City Manager Reese Goad said. "Strategic investment in people and places strengthens our growing community while preserving the unique character that sets Tallahassee apart."
Developed through a year-round, multi-stage process involving public participation, City Commission input and a focus on the priorities outlined in the City's Strategic Plan, the FY22 budget totals more than $1 billion. Within that, the operating budget totals $774.2 million, and the capital budget totals $262.4 million.
According to the Municipal Cost Comparison (MCC), which evaluates what residents pay in taxes and fees for essential city services, Tallahassee is among the lowest cost providers in its peer group of 11 other cities from across the state. The MCC also shows that Tallahassee maintains the lowest millage rate, despite having the second-largest service area and a large portion of non-taxable property (government buildings, universities, churches, etc.).
Other key takeaways from the approved FY22 budget include:
- Maintains millage rate at 4.1000 mills - the same as it has been for the previous six years
- Increased support for a broad range of human service programs
- A robust capital investment plan for infrastructure and neighborhoods
The City's fiscal year begins on October 1.
