Tallahassee Police Make Arrest in University Courtyard Apartments Homicide

The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) has arrested one individual, 26-year-old, Derrick McMillian, in connection with the homicide that occurred on July 6 near the entrance of University Courtyard Apartments.

On July 6, 2025, at approximately 2:40 a.m., Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) Officers on scene were attempting to disperse a large crowd at 3030 South Adams Street when a shooting occurred. Following the shooting, one adult male was located deceased, from a gunshot wound, near the entrance of University Courtyard Apartments located at 3025 South Adams Street.

On the day of the incident, McMillian was observed by officers shooting a gun and was taken into custody after being confronted by officers. However, he was later released as there was limited evidence collected at that time in the investigation to bring about charges.

Following a thorough investigation, and assistance by Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), it was determined that McMillian provided inaccurate information to officers and that all shots fired matched the suspect's weapon. Based on the investigation, including collected evidence, detectives established probable cause. After consultation with the State Attorney's Office, McMillian was arrested and charged with second degree murder.
