Beware of Financial Apps Scams
September 27, 2021
Over the last several weeks, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) has received multiple reports of a new scam involving CashApp and Venmo.
Reported cases involve individuals walking up to someone and asking to use their phone. The individual will say they are stranded because their vehicle broke down and they need to call a tow truck. The victims in these cases have handed over their phone to help. The individual then used it to send themselves money from the victims’ CashApp or Venmo accounts, defrauding victims of between $50 and $800.
TPD’s Financial Crimes Unit reminds citizens to be vigilant and aware. If an individual approaches you asking to use your phone, do not leave it unattended. To avoid handing your phone over, offer to make the call for them. Additionally, citizens are encouraged to activate a security lock on all your financial mobile apps. This added layer of protection requires a four digit passcode before a transaction can be made and assists in increasing the overall security of your device.
If anyone in the community notices suspicious activity, call TPD at 850-891-4200. If you are a victim of a scam or fraud, you can file a report via the DigiTally mobile app or Talgov.com/Police.
