Learn Something New with the Tallahassee Senior Center
16th Annual Lifelong Learning Extravaganza (L3X) Runs Sept. 3-26
August 05, 2025
Autumn in Tallahassee ushers in a season of learning, including for active adults. The City of Tallahassee is proud to announce the return in September of the Tallahassee Senior Center's Lifelong Learning Extravaganza (L3X). Now in its 16th year, L3X offers a robust month of classes, Sept. 3-26, that include workshops, recreational activities, field trips and entertainment.
The public is invited to learn more about L3X at preview parties on Monday, Aug. 11, from 10-11:30 a.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 5:30-7 p.m., at the Tallahassee Senior Center, 1400 N. Monroe Street. Attendees will be able to pick up a course catalog, meet instructors and sponsors, and enjoy refreshments. While the preview parties provide an overview of the L3X curriculum, they are not required for participation. Likewise, you don't have to be a senior to participate in L3X; anyone 18 years of age and older is welcome.
"Lifelong learning creates so many opportunities, no matter your age," said Emily Starnes, the Senior Center's new Lifelong Learning Coordinator. "I'm really looking forward to continuing to build a program that encourages people to connect, explore and try something new together."
With more than 50 classes offered, there's something for everyone: music, art, culture, science, technology, nature, history, literature, food, drink, travel and more. Participants can eXplore, eXamine and eXperience topics such as "Birds of Prey," "Painting Oyster Shells," "The Seminole Experience" and "The Big Bend Butterfly Project." L3X wraps up with a luncheon on Friday, Sept. 26, with John Grandage, Assistant Director of Historical Resources at the Florida Department of State. He will discuss Governor LeRoy Collins - Florida's governor from 1955 to 1961 -own for his leadership during the civil rights era and efforts to modernize the state. Collins later served in the U.S. Department of Commerce and played a key role in national civil rights efforts.
L3X programs are held at various times of the day, including several in the evening to accommodate those who work during the day. While there are four free events, most L3X classes range from $8 to $36, with a few that are higher. Full payment is required with registration, and there will be no refunds unless an activity is canceled. Early registration is encouraged since many classes fill up quickly. Registration for Tallahassee Senior Center Foundation members opens Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 8 a.m. General registration opens Friday, Aug. 15, at 8 a.m. Classes begin on Wednesday, Sept. 3. To view the course catalog and register online, visit www.TallahasseeSeniorFoundation.org/L3X, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m.
